EIA Natural Gas Storage as of 7/03/26, as reported 7/09/26
*Working gas in storage was 2,983 Bcf as of Friday, July 3, 2026, according to EIA estimates. This represents a net increase of 61 Bcf from the previous week. Stocks were 15 Bcf less than last year at this time and 185 Bcf above the five-year average of 2,798 Bcf. At 2,983 Bcf, total working gas is within the five-year historical range.
The NYMEX August contract closed at $3.22/MMBtu yesterday, a $0.05/MMBtu decrease from Tuesday’s close. This week, August has averaged $3.24/MMBtu, about $0.02/MMBtu above last week’s $3.22/MMBtu average. It is trading at $3.05/MMBtu, down $0.16/MMBtu from yesterday’s close. This morning’s EIA storage report showed a +61 Bcf injection, coming in above the +58 Bcf survey consensus and the +54 Bcf five-year average, and at the very top of a wide 49–61 Bcf market estimate range – a third consecutive bearish surprise versus market expectations. Underlying fundamentals remain loose despite supportive summer heat: production was revised up to 110.2 Bcf/d on stronger Northeast and Permian volumes, LNG feedgas is holding near 19 Bcf/d with Sabine Pass and Corpus Christi back from brief maintenance, and Mexican exports are running above 7 Bcf/d. Building heat across the East and Midwest next week should more than offset a cooler southern tier, but with storage sitting roughly 165 Bcf above the five-year average, the front-month remains rangebound for a fifth straight week.
